Repetitive strain injury is the term used to describe a musculoskeletal injury effecting neck, shoulder, arm, wrist and hands. The most common cause of repetitive strain injury is a repetitive movement in the workplace which can result in inflammation of the tendon, ligaments usually in the arm or forearm

It is particularly common in employees who engage in repetitive movements that are carried out in an awkward position without suitable rest breaks.

The risk factors which must be identified by employers include poor posture, incorrect handling of loads, poor seating or standing position and insufficient rest.

Studies have shown that the risk of repetitive strain injury will increase with age and that also women are much more susceptible to repetitive strain injury then men.

All employers are required to carry out risk assessments and to be able to identify those jobs that have a high risk of a repetitive strain injury. If a job is identified of being of high risk of repetitive strain injury then the employer must ensure that the employee conducting those jobs has adequate rest periods, that they introduce a various in tasks performed that they provide in how to handle loads and the posture that should be developed when performing this job.

If the employer fails to carry out a risk assessment to identify the safest possible approach to the job then it could mean that the employer would be liable for any injury suffered by the employee and be liable to pay damages.
