We recently settled a personal jury action for out lovely client who was involved in a serious T-bone collision—a type of accident that is particularly dangerous due to the lack of protection from side impacts.
The Incident: A Devastating T-Bone Collision
Our plaintiff, was travelling along a main road in County Donegal with the right of way when another driver emerged from a side road and collided with the side of our client’s vehicle. The impact was direct to the driver’s side of her car, causing significant damage and severe injuries to the plaintiff.
The mechanics of a T-Bone Crash: How Side Impacts Cause Severe Injury
Unlike head-on or rear-end collisions, where the front and back crumple zones absorb much of the force, side-impact (T-bone) collisions provide little protection to the driver and passengers.
When a vehicle is struck from the side, it undergoes instantaneous lateral acceleration. Unlike in a frontal collision, where seat belts and airbags help distribute the force across the torso, a side impact propels the driver sideways, with very little structural support to absorb the energy.
Beyond the direct impact, a T-bone collision often causes secondary rotational forces. If the struck car is not stabilized, the force can spin the vehicle, causing:
- Hyperextension injuries as the body is thrown in different directions.
- Head trauma from contact with the window or door frame.
While physical injuries are visible, psychological effects are just as debilitating. Our plaintiff developed Flashbacks and nightmares, symptoms consistent with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The Legal Claim: Pursuing Compensation for Damages
Given the severity of her injuries and the clear liability of the other driver, the plaintiff initiated a personal injury claim seeking compensation for:
-
General Damages (Pain and Suffering)
Her injuries had a long-term impact on her quality of life, affecting her ability to work, drive, and perform daily activities. The psychological trauma further compounded her suffering, warranting a significant award for pain and suffering.
-
Special Damages (Medical Expenses and Loss of Earnings)
Her claim included:
- Past and future medical costs (physiotherapy, psychological treatment, medications).
- Loss of earnings due to time off work and potential career impact.
- Ongoing therapy and rehabilitation to regain mobility and manage PTSD.
-
Loss of Amenity
She could no longer enjoy activities she once loved, such as exercise, travel, and social outings. This loss of enjoyment in life was an essential part of her compensation claim. We feel it is so important to include the details of how the accident impacts our clients daily life. Not everything can be included in a medical report. Oftentimes the effect of not being able to socialize, go to work or engage in one’s hobbies can have a profound impact on the plaintiff’s mental and physical well-being. We ensure that all of these effects are pleaded in the case so that the court is aware of the full impact on the plaintiff.
Conclusion: The Lasting Impact of a T-Bone Collision
This case highlights how side-impact collisions are among the most dangerous road traffic accidents, leading to long-term physical and psychological injuries. Beyond the immediate pain, T-bone crash victims often suffer from chronic pain, emotional distress, and financial losses.
For personal injury plaintiffs, securing fair compensation is not just about financial recovery—it is about justice, acknowledgment of their suffering, and access to the best possible medical care and rehabilitation.
If you or a loved one has suffered injuries in a T-bone accident, seeking legal guidance early ensures that your rights are protected, and you receive the full compensation you deserve.
