Slip and Fall in a Supermarket
In a recent case, we acted on behalf of a client who suffered a significant injury following a fall in a
supermarket. At the time of the accident, she was pregnant. While shopping, she slipped on a wet floor
that had not been properly addressed or signposted. The fall was sudden and severe—she slipped
backwards and landed heavily on the ground, sustaining a profound back injury.
The injury had an immediate impact on our client’s health and wellbeing, compounded by the fact that
she was expecting a child. However, the consequences extended far beyond the initial trauma. She
experienced ongoing pain, reduced mobility, and significant disruption to her daily life. The injury also
raised concerns about her long-term physical health and quality of life.
We issued proceedings in the High Court. A critical part of our approach was to ensure that every aspect
of our client’s injury was fully understood and evidenced.
We engaged a range of expert witnesses, including:
- Orthopaedic surgeons to assess the physical injury
- Medical consultants to evaluate prognosis and long-term impact
- Psychological experts to consider emotional and mental health effects
Our client also required extensive physiotherapy, which formed an important part of both her recovery
and the evidential basis of her claim. Through detailed preparation, strategic case-building, and robust representation, we were able to bring the matter to mediation. This resulted in a settlement that reflected the true extent of our client’s
injuries and future needs. Interestingly, the settlement achieved in this case was 2.5 times the assessment made by the injuries board.
